If you only have a little while in Ireland and will be staying in Dublin but still want to get a feel for the famous Irish countryside, a trip down to Glendalough is an amazing option. This wonderfully picturesque valley features a 6th century monastery, and some of the most beautiful walks on the island—made even more special by the August sun. See it for yourself as part of this Glendalough, Wicklow & Kilkenny Day Trip!

2. Šibenik, Croatia

Of course, Croatia as a whole experiences some of its highest levels of tourism at this time of year, especially in the hotspots of Split, Dubrovnik and Zagreb. However, there are plenty of ‘undiscovered gems’ across the country which don’t receive quite as much attention, even during peak season. One of our favourite places to visit in Croatia is the charming city of Šibenik. The oldest city in the Adriatic, Šibenik has a storied history and boasts wonderful architecture, incredible sea views and plenty of great restaurants to choose from. Learn about the city’s history on this Šibenik guided tour. It’s also the closest town to Krka National Park, so definitely take a look at this Krka National Park tour to connect with nature during your trip!

3. Fiji

Fiji might just be the perfect August destination. At this time of year, the average temperature teeters around 26°C (79°F), and Fiji is right in the middle of the dry season. August would be considered peak season, so many of the hotspots will be busy. Definitely make all of your bookings as far in advance of your trip as possible.

Perhaps the best way to enjoy Fiji is to head island hopping, especially at this time of year. Tivua Island is an island where all of your dreams of Fiji become a reality! This small tropical island is home to beautiful white beaches and is surrounded by an incredible diversity of marine life. On this Tivua Island Day Trip, you can participate in water sports, chill out on the beach, and even enjoy a barbecue on board the boat!

4. Cyprus

One of the hottest months of the year in Cyprus (28°C–34°C/83°F–93°F), August is the time to visit if you fancy basking in the sun or enjoying water sports on the country’s beaches—some of which are ranked among the best in the world. One of the coolest things you can do in Cyprus is to go exploring on a buggy tour. If you’re staying in Paphos (one of our favourite cities), we recommend checking out this Geroskipou, Mandria & Episkopi Buggy Tour.

5. Edinburgh, Scotland

Though busy, the (generally) drier and more pleasant weather alone makes an August trip to Edinburgh’s cobbled streets worthwhile. However, the main reason to visit this historic Scottish city in August is the fantastic Edinburgh Festival. A slightly confusing name, the Edinburgh Festival refers to a number of independent events which are held from June to September. The most famous festivals (both of which take place throughout August) are the Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival—the largest performing arts festival in the world. However, the city is host to book festivals, jazz festivals, film festivals and much more.

August is also a superb time of year to book yourself a day trip from Edinburgh. Check out the Scottish Highlands, including Loch Ness on this Edinburgh: Loch Ness, Highlands & Glencoe Day Trip.

6. Nairobi, Kenya

Right in the middle of Kenya’s dry season and one of the cooler months of the year, August is the prime time to visit the bustling Kenyan capital city: Nairobi. Learn about the city’s fascinating history on this guided tour of Nairobi.

August is also an excellent time to go on a safari in Kenya, with the Great Migration in full swing. In Nairobi, the so-called ‘safari capital of the world’, there are plenty of options to choose from. We recommend checking out this day trip to Amboseli National Park Private Safari, on which you can see giraffes, leopards, lions, buffaloes and much more, all in their natural habitat, and also visit a Maasai village.

7. Paris, France

Paris is a lovely place to visit in August. While it’s true that many locals leave the city in August, and you’ll be faced with a long line at the major tourist attractions, that doesn’t mean that it’s to be avoided! At this time of year, the city enjoys some of its warmest weather, clear skies, and blooming flowers. What’s more, in August you can truly enjoy the weather in the French capital, thanks to the Paris Plages. What are the Paris Plages you ask? Every summer, the riverbanks which run along the mighty Seine are converted into a beach resort! Sit by the river on a lounge chair under a sun umbrella, have a go at water sports and even enjoy dance entertainment!

There’s lots to do in the French capital, check out some more activities in Paris with Civitatis.

8. London, England

August is the end of peak season in London and is generally one of the hottest months of the year. Other than the warm weather, London is host to a number of cultural events in the month of August. Perhaps the most famous is Notting Hill Carnival—Europe’s largest street festival, celebrating Caribbean culture with colourful parades, music, dance and wonderful food!

If you’re treated to good weather during your trip, it might also be an idea to make your way out of London to get some fresh air. We recommend checking out this day trip to Stonehenge. The most architecturally sophisticated prehistoric stone circle in the world, this megalithic monument and UNESCO World Heritage Site is located just outside of the city.

9. Bilbao, Spain

With most of Spain subject to the sweltering heat of the Summer sun, the northern coast of Spain is a great option during the month of August. In Bilbao for example, it’ll be warm during the day (30°C/86°F), though extreme heat is uncommon, and temperatures drop during the evening.

Bilbao is a fascinating city to visit at any time of the year, boasting an incredible combination of old and new, as well as a huge selection of fantastic restaurants. You can choose to visit the avant-garde Guggenheim Museum (get the full experience with this private tour of the Guggenheim Museum), or wander around the city’s historic old town, a feature of this free tour of Bilbao.

There are also plenty of great day trips to take from Bilbao. We recommend heading off on this day trip to San Sebastian & San Juan de Gaztelugatxe—two of the most charming spots along the Basque coastline.

10. Buenos Aires, Argentina

Despite being winter in Buenos Aires, temperatures are definitely manageable, generally staying around 8–16°C (46–62°F). Being off-season, August is a great time to visit Buenos Aires’ key landmarks, without being subjected to long queues! When you arrive, get a feel for the city on this free walking tour of Buenos Aires, and gain an insight into its fascinating history.

For shopping, gastronomy and nightlife, we recommend making your way to the area of Palermo, (which you can see as part of this Palermo Free Walking Tour), one of the coolest areas in the city, and one of our favourites.

That brings our top 10 list to a close. Hopefully, at least one of our entries sparked an interest and gave you some inspiration for your travel itinerary. Regardless of where you end up going, make sure to fill your trip with activities with Civitatis.
